Story

Stand became a Specter shortly after Athena's seal on the 108 Demon Stars was released. The Ugly Star and the Deadly Beetle Surplice sought him out and transformed him into one of Hades' warriors, to fight against Athena in a new Holy War. As soon as he realized his sworn oath to Hades, he set out to the Underworld and was given the roll of guardian of the 5th prison of the Underworld. His lord Hades had not fully awakened in his chosen vessel of the 20th century, but was still able to give out orders behind the scenes. The god had managed to convince several of Athena's deceased Saints to take the goddess' life in return for their life back. The Saints had however bluffed, but Athena's life was nevertheless taken, though by her own hands. When presenting the remains of the goddess to the right hand of Hades Pandora, the goddess' body had disappeared. One of the revived Saints Gemini Saga suggested Athena might have gone to the Underworld to personally defeat Hades.
Oh I just stepped on him and he cracked
Pandora became suspicious and very cautious of the fact that the goddess might have infiltrated their territory. She therefore ordered all Specters stationed on Earth to withdraw to the Underworld, as well as making their fortress on Earth Hades' Castle crumble to bits.[1]

Several Saints had however made it to the Underworld before the castle had fallen down, and was now moving in the Underworld. News travelled somewhat slow that their domain had been breached. Stand who was guarding the 5th prison was performing his duties when Gemini Kanon, the twin brother of Saga appeared. The Gold Saint was able to kill Stand without any sort of effort, and when two more Saints appeared, Cygnus Hyoga and Dragon Shiryu, the Specter was still standing there. There was no signs of battle until the Deadly Beetle Surplice started to crack and the dead body of Stand fell over. [2]

Concept & Creation

Stand was created by Masami Kurumada for the classic Saint Seiya series. He was defeated by Gemini Kanon before even uttering a word as their battle happened off screen and the reader only saw his lingering defeat. His name and one of his techniques "Stand By Me" is a reference to the song "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King from 1961. The song was also used as the theme song for the movie "Stand By Me" where a group of young boys search for the body of a deceased boy. In The Lost Canvas Stand appears as one of Aiacos servants and has a lot more talk-active role. He tries to hinder the main protagonists from escaping the Gate to the Underworld in his first appearance, but fails. In his second appearance he is sent with a task force to destroy the Ship of Hope, but is killed by Aiacos for being annoying.[3]

Special Techniques

None of Stand's techniques are seen in the original manga, but as can be seen by their names they have something to do with his big size and statue.
