Papillon Myu Chiyōsei Papiyon no Myū (地妖星パピヨンのミュー) is a minor character from Masami Kurumada's classic anime/manga series, Saint Seiya. His power lies within the Earthly Bewitching Star (地妖星), and is one of Wyvern Rhadamanthys' subordinates. He is part of the squad of Specters that invade Athena's Sanctuary in 1990 and has great Pyschokinetic powers. He battles Aries Mu during the invasion of Sanctuary.

Story

Ewww, warts

Myu was one of the chosen vessels for a Specter souls, when the seal on the Specters was released in 1990. His soul and Surplice sought him out and transformed him into the Papillon Specter. Myu was a special case in that the transformation turned him into a being that could metamorphose from a muccus, to larvae and from a larvae to a cocoon and from a cocoon to a human/butterfly hybrid. Feeling his oath to serve his lord Hades, Myu travelled to Hades' Castle where he joined up with his fellow Specters. While waiting for the true imminent revival of Hades, Myu served Pandora and Wyvern Rhadamanthys. As Hades started to awaken his spirit, he made an offering to revive several of Athena's Gold Saints if they took Athena's life in exchange. They accepted and were sent of the Athena's Sanctuary. Rhadamanthys did not like this move very much and pleaded Pandora to let him go in their stead, but she refused. So in secret he ordered Frog Zelos to send about a dozen Specters to the Sanctuary to spy and if they failed, finish the Saints' mission. Zelos had sent one of the strongest Specters, Papillon Myu just in case their opponents proved too much.^[1]^[1]

A bug

The group of Specters managed to enter the Twelve Temples without being discovered and passed through the Taurus Temple where they left Deep Niobe to deal with Taurus Aldebaran. But upon arriving in the Cancer Temple, Gemini Saga, Capricorn Shura, Aquarius Camus ended up in a long-distance battle with Virgo Shaka. In a fierce blast of lightning, the three remaining revived Saint they were following disappeared. Feeling unsure of what to do they remained in the Cancer Temple until Aries Mu showed up. Myu recognised him as the Sanctuary's most gifted user of psychokinesis and wanted to challenge him personally. So without the Saint even knowing they were there, he used his own psychokinetic abilities to paralyse the Saint and hold him against a temple column. This gave the Specters the time to question the Saint about the whereabouts of Saga, Camus and Shura. But as Mu called them pathetic for losing them and refusing to answer, Cyclops Gigant used his fist to make him talk. He punched Mu through the column but even after that he refused to say anything, but as he was about to finish him of, Myu intervened. He made his appearance known as a moving pile of mucus, but even so his Cosmo made all the other Specters afraid of him. Mu recognised him as the one who had paralysed him and sensed his powerful Cosmo. Myu commanded Gigant and the others to leave and head to the next temple, but Gigant objected saying that it was his prey. Myu asked if the Cyclops could not follow his order to which he reluctantly agreed to leave, and while they left he called Mu unlucky for having Papillon choose him as prey.^[1]

Mu did not realize it when Myu released him from his paralysis, and the Specter had to tell Mu that he had been in front of him all along for him to see him. The Saint was repulsed by the grotesque appearance the Specter was in, and did not realize it was him and decided to leave. But Papillon made his voice known and said he would not leave because the SPecter had told his fellow warriors that he would take care of the Saint. The Aries Saint was surprised that Myu was not even human. Myu explained he remained and undid the paralysis for the chance to face the famous Aries Mu on even terms. Mu prepared himself, while Myu used his technique "Ugly Eruption" to attack. It was deflected by Mu's Crystal Wall technique to Papillon's disbelief. Mu retaliated by using the technique passed down from his Master Aries Shion, Stardust Revolution. The mucus on Papillon started to crack and as a bug-like creature he burst out. Mu wondered what sort of strange Specter Papillon Myu was that could into such different things. Myu suddenly unleashed his "silky thread" technique which started to wrap Mu in a cocoon. Mu tried to struggle and break free but the threads moved on their own and was according to Myu unbreakable even by a Gold Saint. The Specter said he would turn into a cocoon soon and then he would suffocate to death. As the Saint passed out, Myu used this opportunity to make his final metamorphosis and turned himself into a cocoon.^[1]

A small period of time passed as Mu managed to break out of the cocoon in desperation. He noticed the cocoon that was hanging in the air above him and wondered what could be inside of it. Myu made himself known inside of the cocoon and told him why he had put himself in a cocoon. The Specter had never thought that Silky Threads technique would kill the Saint and had to undergo the Final Metamorphosis to achieve his most invincible form. Mu replied angrily that the Specter had been toying with him and the Specter agreed because he needed some time to sleep for his final metamorphosis. Mu understood now that Papillon was like his evolutionary namesake. Myu told him to witness his final form as he burst from the cocoon. And just like a Papillon he now had butterfly wings and where dressed in his Surplice.^[1]

The Faerie

But now that he had achieved his final form he said that Mu's death was certain, Mu countered likewise. The Specter reminded him that he would be dead now if he had not lifted his paralysis hold on the Saint. The Aries Saint responded that if it was mind games he wanted, he was up against the Gold Saint's most skilled psychokinesis user. Myu decided to test him and sent several temple columns flying at Mu, whom easily sent them back towards Myu. The Specter was surprised but stopped the columns nevertheless and said the Saint was as good as they said. Suddenly Myu felt he could not move his body and the Saint said he had returned the favour from earlier with a little extra. The Specter started floating upwards and sent smashing into wall after wall with an extreme force. Myu realized why the Aries Saint was so feared now. The Aries Saint lifted him up once more and asked how many Specters had invaded Sanctuary to which Myu said that he would never tell. He then started to spin around, faster and faster. Mu said that if he answered the question he would stop, but Papillon said that Specters did not beg for their lives. Mu said he had never intended to take someone's life, but the Specters was of a different kind and they could not be allowed to live. The Specter spun like a tornado now and would eventually die by the pressure according to Mu, but as he was walking away the Papillon started to unleash a strange aura and several Faeries with his Faerie Thronging technique. Mu tried to take them down with his Stardust Revolution technique but it was ineffective. As Mu laid entrapped by the faeries, Myu said they were Hades butterflies and would take him to the underworld. But as they were about to transport him, Mu teleported away from them. Myu did not realize it at first and wondered if the Saint had not left any traces of himself. Yet he sensed him soon and the faeries found the Saint very quickly. He gave the Saint credit for surviving the Faerie Thronging, but that he would not survive it twice.

Caught in the net

As Myu raised his hand to perform his technique, Myu retaliated with and ineffective Stardust Revolution. As Mu pondered what to do, Myu attacked again yet Mu dodged it also again. The Papillon admitted the Saint's psychokinetic powers were far above the norm but could not figure out why he did not teleport further away from him. Aries Mu said that the Cancer Temple would be the Specter's grave, but Myu did not agree and attacked him again with his Faerie Thronging. As Mu started to teleport, the Specter followed with his own powers but it was all a trick as Myu got stuck in Mu's Crystal Net. Myu was in disbelief and asked when the Saint had set up the Crystal Net. Mu simply replied that the Specter could not run away now, but Myu had other plans. As the faeries flocked around Mu he told him that the Faeries would always flock to their enemies until they had taken its life. Mu told him to stop as he would lose his life in the process, but that ghost from the underworld maybe did not fear death. Myu revealed that they were not phantoms like the revived Gold Saints, but living breathing humans from Earth. As the 108 evil stars were revived, the Specter souls inside of them were awakened. Mu understood to which Myu told his faeries to send Mu to the underworld. But the Saint burned his Cosmo to form another Crystal Net that trapped the faeries. Mu then told the Specter that he could let the butterflies take Myu to the underworld. Myu was disintegrated in a flash as was his faeries, but as Mu left the temple, one faerie remained.^[1]

The Faerie came to later report to Frog Zelos on Athena's suicide.^[1]

Concept & Creation

What happens to screen hoggers

Myu was created by Masami Kurumada for the classic Saint Seiya series. His appearance in the anime adaption plays out similarly but with the inclusion of Pegasus Seiya in the beginning. Therefore the test of strength with the temple columns is excluded. Though the later parts play out as it did in the manga after Seiya leaves when Myu is impressed by his determination and lets him leave.^[1]

Special Techniques

Most of Myu's techniques make use of organic substances or creatures.

"Ugly Eruption"

In his first states as a mucus pile with warts, Myu can use this technique which shoots some sort of substance from the warts that can be quite damaging.

"Silky Thread"

This technique is used in his second larvae state to trap his enemies in airtight cocoons that would suffocate them. The thread is also used to make Myu's own cocoon in preparation for his final metamorphosis.

"Fairy Thronging"

The most powerful of the Papillon Specter's techniques makes the use of butterflies called Faeries or Hades' Butterflies. After summoning them they seek out their enemy and stay very close to their prey. The faeries act like markers for Myu who with a strike of his hand orders them to teleport the enemy to the Underworld where he would automatically perish if he did not have the 8th Sense.
