Background

Infant Kouga watching the fight between Seiya and Mars

An undisclosed number of years after the battle against Hades, the God of War, Mars, launches a campaign of destruction throughout the world. Seiya, as the Sagittarius Gold Saint, leads his comrades on the counterattack against Mars' forces. The battle than ensued was left without a clear victor when a meteor filled with an strange Cosmo fell on the battlefield, letting out a strange energy way. The newborn Kouga and Aria were found at the site of the crater having been bathed in Darkness and Light Cosmos. Athena managed to take Kouga while Mars grabbed Aria. Realizing that the baby boy would have a harsh destiny because of the Darkness Cosmo inside of him, she decided to raise and bathe him in her own Light Cosmo in hopes that it would lead the child to a better future.

Several months after being born, as the baby Kouga learned how to walk, Mars returned, clad in a new armor called "Galaxy", to take Athena. In her effort to protect the child, Saori was wounded by Mars' Darkness which prevented her from properly burn her own Cosmo, however before the God of War could take her, Seiya arrived to save them both. The young Kouga watched in awe as Mars and Seiya fought each other with all they had, ending up with the former severely wounded and the latter no where to be found.

Personality

Kouga has been compared to a young Seiya several people through the story. The two of the share a determination to stand back up and never give up that borders on stubbornness. However, Kouga has to be a bit more intensive and emotional than his predecessor, which makes him for more reckless and often requires his companions to intervene and keep him out of trouble.

Having been raised on an island away from most civilization, Kouga has shown to have a simplistic mindset, often addressing problems in a straight forward manner, which often means using force. Yuna and Souma even comment that Kouga is only able to make fists when they were playing Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who would carry the luggage.

Story

Training

Begining

Kouga was raised by Saori on a remote island along with Tatsumi and Ophiuchus Shaina. Despite the young man's unwillingness, Kouga spent a good portion of his young life going through the rigorous training to become a Saint. Dissatisfied with what he felt was a future he had never chosen, Kouga started to question why did he needed to protect Athena, unaware that he was talking about Saori, and even made light of the sacrifice that Seiya made for him many years ago. Aware of the young man's troubling thoughts, Saori tried her best to sooth his mind by telling him that becoming a Saint will give Kouga the strength to protect what's precious to him. Kouga is still not convinced, but comments about having a dream of a man covered in gold and wonder if that was Seiya. At this Saori tells Kouga that things will become clear to him once he becomes a Saint and gives him her pendant saying that it is a very precious item.

Unfortunately, the moment is cut short by the arrival of Mars, who has spent the last 13 years recuperating from his fight with Seiya and has now return to take Athena. In an effort to protect Kouga, Saori reveals herself as Athena to him, but the Darkness Wound Mars inflicted years prior prevents her from properly using her Cosmo. Shaina arrives and tries to fight Mars, but she is quickly defeated by the God of Wars. At that point, Kouga desperation to protect Saori causes the pendant to react and grant the young man the Pegasus Bronze Cloth, surprising Mars as he sees a shadow of Seiya in the boy. Clad in the Pegasus Cloth, Kouga has a vision of Seiya guiding him to burn his Cosmo, which allows the new Saint to unleash a powerful Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken that managest to push Mars' Cosmo back.[1]

Meeting the new best friend

Sadly, Kouga's new found power was not strong enough and Mars immediately regained the upper-hand, beating the young man and destroying a large portion of the island in the processes. The next day, Kouga informs Shaina that he is planning to leave the island and search for Saori. Shaina accepts the boy's wishes, saying that the Pegasus Clothstone, the pendant Saori left him, will surely show him the way. Tatsumi then takes Kouga to the mainland and bids him far-well. Soon after setting out, a young man recognizes Kouga's pendant as a Clothstone and excitedly as if he's a Saint as well. Taken by surprise, Kouga reacts aggressively at the newcomer which leads to a small confrontation, ending with Kouga being coincidentally knocked out. Once Kouga regains consciousness, the young man presents himself as Lionet Souma and ask for redhead's name and title, showing great surprise when he find out that Kouga inherited the Pegasus Bronze Cloth which used to belong to the Legendary Saint, Seiya. After Souma briefly explains why the Elemental Cosmo works, Kouga tells his new friend about his journey to find Athena.

Souma is not ready to believe the redhead and decides to check a place where Athena was suppose to be living in, unknowingly taking Kouga back to the island. Not being able to find any news about Athena's whereabouts, Souma decides that there might be some truth to Pegasus Saint's story and decides to take him to a place where they are sure to find out the truth about Athena, the school of Saint, the Palaestra. As the two young Saints start to make their way to the school, the get attack by the Martian, a member of Mars' forces, [Ordykia|Mantis Ordykia] who manages to capture them both in his Darkness Cosmo. However, Kouga manages to awake his own Light Cosmo to dispel the Martian's and give Souma an opening to attack and defeat Ordykia.[1]

As soon as the two arrive at the Palaestra, Geki, one of the teachers and the former Bear Saint, has Aquila Yuna administrate a test for Kouga, which he passes by being able to successfully summon his Cloth. Kouga is taken to see the Acting-Principal where he is told that Athena is safe and sound at the Sanctuary, but only those who have ascended to the rank of Gold Saint may see her, and if the redhead wants to he has to attend the school and start making his way up, leaving the boy no choice but to accept. To ease Kouga's worries, Souma has him ask Yuna about Saori's well-being since the girl has the ability to read into the future with the stars, unfortunately, she ignores the Pegasus Saint's pleas. Later that day, Kouga is confronted by other students about the Pegasus Cloth, but he manages to get away from them and ends up finding Yuna, who this time decides to help the young man and tells him that while Athena is fine, she can see that something dark is closing in on her. The two are soon confronted by one of their classmates again, but before things can escalate, Geki intervenes and has Yuna fight the other student in a sparing match, telling Kouga that he wants her to learn that as a Saint it is better to follow one's heart than to follow the rules.[1]

Abilities

Elemental Cosmo

Kouga manifesting his Light Cosmo

Light Cosmo

Kouga showed affinity with the extremely rare Light Cosmo, surprising his classmates, teachers, and even Mars. With the Light Cosmo, Kouga was able to dispel Mantis Ordykia's Darkness Cosmo, create a resonance with Aria's own Light Cosmo, and perform his Pegasus Senkou Ken technique. However, after the destruction of the Lightning Ruins, Kouga discovered that the Light Cosmo was not his own and since then he has been shown having problems using it and wonders how he was even able to do so up until now. Aria offers that perhaps it was Athena's own Light Cosmos that was still protecting him, or maybe the mere fact that Kouga believed in it caused his Light to shine.

Darkness Cosmo

Kouga's true Cosmo since his birth on the day that the meteor fell in Mars and Seiya's battlefield. The Darkness Cosmo manifested itself during Kouga's second battled with Orion Eden. Afterwards, Kouga commented how he felt oddly relaxed despited being surrounded by darkness. While trapped in an illusion at the Darkness Ruin, a dark version of Saori tells Kouag that if he embraces his Darkness Cosmo, he would become strong enough to defeat Mars.

Special Techniques

Kōga's Ryu Sei Ken

Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken

Kouga performs hundreds of punches at the same time which makes it look like small meteors. Seiya's signature technique, Kouga learned this technique the first time he donned the Pegasus Cloth, instinctively preforming it after seeing a vision of Seiya telling him to burn his Cosmo. Kouga had problems using this techniques until after being inspired by Geki's words about how Seiya never failed to stand back up.

Pegasus Senkou Ken

Kouga gather Light Cosmo into his fist and then drives the charged punch into his opponent. The impact lets out a blinding flash of light. A technique developed by Kouga himself during his fight with Ryuho after the Dragon Saint pushed him to fire up his Cosmo.

Concept & Creation

Kōga was created solely for Saint Seiya: Omega and was not created by any contact with Masami Kurumada. Before the production of the series, Kurumada told the producers that they had free reign over the show. From the beginning they were planning to use a style more similar to Shingo Araki but the plans were scrapped and the designs was used in a new style instead.
