Ranking your favorite gold saints ( not by power just liking)
« on: January 17, 2016, 05:38:59 AM »
So i decided to make this topic to see how people would rank all 14 gold saints ( including kanon shion aiolos) based on liking them, please do not rank them based on who's stronger, anyways here's my list:

1-Saga/Kanon well i am a Gemini xD and they are the most badasses during the series
2-Mu i don't know if any fanbase can possibly not like this guy
3-Dohko very fun character who i always enjoy watching
4-Shaka it's never bad to watch him play with people although he can be a dick from time to time
5-Milo- pretty badass
6-Shura- i love how all capricorn saints use excalibur and shura isn't an exception
7-Camus- Hyoga's master was really sad to see him diec:(
8-Shion- he is Mu's master and i like all the aries saints to be honest
9-Aiolos- we don't know much about him and this is why i put him so low but he saved athena in a very heroic way and that scene where he holds the arrow to break the wailing wall is just too emotional.
10-Aiolia- the seiya of gold saints, i never liked seiya...
11-Aldebaran- for some reason all taurus saints piss me off, is it plot armor that they all need to be giants and that they should have the worse moves
12-Aphrodite- A traitor to athena but he redeemed himself at the wailing wall and redeemed himself again in SoG as if it wasn't for him the goldies would have lost
13- Deathmask also redeemed himself at the wailling wall but also in SoG where he killed a God warrior and we saw him almost crying cause of the god warrior killing a woman he cared about helping.

this is my list i'd hope to see yours :)

1- Dohko- After reading Next Dimension and Lost Canvas I can't help but like him the most. He was also a boss in Soul of Gold and the classic series.
2- Shion- For some reason I didn't really like him in ND and LC (didn't do too much as I recall) but in the Hades Arc he was very impressive.
3- Mu- What can I say? He's calm and wise but is very strong when he's serious.
4- Milo- I like his style. I never liked him that much until that scene where he tested Kanon. SoG really didn't do justice to him though...
5- Shaka- Wise and strong. What's not to like?
6- Saga- Everything about him just oozes badass.
7- Shura- SoG really boosted him up. I never thought too much about him except his Excalibur was epic.
8- Aldebaran- Same as Shura. Nothing about him stood out. He just your typical big buy/big heart deal. In SoG and from what I've read from Episode G, I really like him.
9- Camus- Very cool (no pun intended) and calm and wise. I just don't like how whenever he appears, he's portrayed as a traitor, lol!
10- Aiolia- For some reason I don't like him that much. You'd think that after Episode G and SoG he'd be more interesting. Seems a lot like Seiya to me.
11- Aphrodite- SoG showed me that he was beast. Before that I didn't like him at all.
12- Deathmask- SoG also boosted him. Before that I still thought he was cool. I liked his personality but I liked others better.
13- Kanon- Seemed like a Saga rip off when he was bad and good. So technically I like him as much as Saga but he isn't Saga. So as a character he's unoriginal.
14- Aiolos- We only really saw him in SoG and from what we've seen he wasn't impressive (to me). I like him but I can't compare him to Gold Saints that I've seen throughout the series

1- Mu = Cause I love his morbid sense of humor, and smart assed remarks from the manga. xD Even though he's a pacifist, he's got zero problems slamming Shiryu in a coffin down over Kiki's head, even though he also claimed that Shiryu was nearly dead. xD Cause yeah, doing that was totally the smart thing to do at the time. LOL

2- Shaka = When I see him, I see him trying so hard to act like a mature badass, but he's really more of an adult, who doesn't know how to adult badass. xD ((though my adulting comment could be said of many of the goldies really LOL))

3- Aphrodite = Not given enough credit for what he does. He literally takes care of poisonous flowers everyday at his temple. And while he seemed to of betrayed Athena, in reality it was a hidden agenda on his part. I don't think he was given enough credit on many things.

4- Shion = Wise beyond his years, even when he was young, but I can't help but love the face he made when he found out he was going to be the new pope. That was hilarious!

5- Camus = He's more caring than he's given credit for.

6- Milo = He's very loyal to his teammates and allies. But can be very hot headed, which isn't always a bad thing. Gotta love his stubborness at times (Like in soul of gold when he kept nagging Mu to send him the dagger.)

7- Aldebaren = xD I like when he got picked on when a girl gave him a flower. And he's really nice. He's just a gentle giant most of the time. xD And I love that he likes tiny trinkets. LOL.

8- Dohko = xD Who doesn't love a guy who's been around for literal decades, raised a girl he found (and she didn't come out messed up, scary I know. How did that happen?!) at the foot of the mountains who'd been abandoned, guards over the seal of the underworld, and still has time for shenanigans against his own team. xD ((Getting Aldebaren into a battle in SOG))

9- Aiolos = Loving brother, protected Athena, This is all we really have on him. Though we have to appreciate how even in death he did his best to help out. But alas, he had to go somewhere. And near the bottom is unfortunately where he is for me.

10- Aiolia- The literal Seiya of the goldies. While I don't mind this fact. It's actually rather annoying to me as well. Especially how in Episode G it was mainly about him, same with Soul of Gold. I mean with Seiya I can understand because of all the back information that comes from when he was Tenma in his past life. So there's a hidden story there for Seiya. But for Aiolia it's just like "....no...now you're just trying to make the same thing with a different character." kind of thing for me.

11- Shura = He kinda bores me.

12- Kanon = Too much of him complaining about wanting attention, and that's really what he is. He just wanted a lot of attention. Granted he bettered himself later on. But he caused many problems that were so unnecessary.

13- Deathmask = While I enjoy the fact that he was very different from all the other gold saints in terms of having no problems drinking, it's also a fact that he also enjoyed killing people for no reason. Even if he did better himself later (which I enjoyed, especially when he thought the girl in SOG was saying he was pretty, but it was actually Aphrodite she said it to). Still he was a unique character.

14- Saga = Very selfish, greedy, even killed Shion ((In the manga)) because of his greed of wanting to be the pope. >.< Also tried to kill Athena. My list can go on. Like his brother, he's so whiney.

I can't put a sureshot rank, my liking is different than yours. What I have is multiples in one spot...

1. Shion, Mu, Saga, Kanon, Aioria, Aioros, Shura

2. Aldebaran, Deathmask, Shaka, Milo, Camus,  Aphrodite

3. Dohko

My judgment is based only on the original manga series, no spin-offs.

Can you explain the reason for this though? I think it'd be interesting to know your reasoning on this. 83

Well...ok I didn't want to get into more details but I'll do it.

Rank 1.

Shion being one of the most powerful Gold Saints since the Age of the Myth, the strongest psychokinetic Gold Saint, devised a plan to help Athena while being under a watchful eye and the fact that he lived for so many years just by burning his Cosmo is remarkable enough for me. Plus he is Mu's master.

Mu..you just can't hate this guy. Earlier in the series, even though he hasn't really showed that he had potential, he still makes you have a soft spot for him. He didn't defend the temple from the L5 like all the others did, he let them go through; sure you can say that in the Hades Arc he didn't want Seiya to pass through but he was following Athena's orders, nor he tried to kill him but teleported him. He is a calm character and possibly the most reasonable of all the Gold Saints...well tied with Shion.

Saga the one who was rumored to be a God incarnated. The most powerful Gold Saint of the last generation, a lunatic that argues with himself-split personality (people want to believe it was another entity living inside the Gemini Cloth...that's fine but I know what Masami was trying to do there), he planned to take on the Gods, fight for the humans, although honestly I don't think he would have succeed (if Ophiuchus who was the strongest Gold Saint lost to Gods then Saga had obviously no chance) and even though he is not the best person, I like him as a character, he is well developed...not a stock character.

Kanon slightly less powerful than his aniki, he was supposed to be the evil one among the twins but he changed his ways after hearing that it was Athena that saved him while being imprisoned. He managed tricking Poseidon and wanted to rule his army without awakening him. Personally, I like Kanon a little more than Saga. Oh and I love how he made the Underworld his playground. That was totally epic.

Aioria this dude..he is just cool. From the very beginning of the story for just being a spectator at Seiya's fight for the Pegasus Cloth, he looks a likable person. He was sent to assassinate the supposedly impostor Athena and the L5 for being her supporters. Well, I am not going to give full summary of the story for every character but in any case he is a man of justice and he was trying to do what was right.

Aioros brave Gold Saint, he saved Athena from Saga's clutches. He is the Alpha of the story, thanks to him....he gave birth to the L5..well with the little help of Kiddo. Despite the fact that he didn't have much of a screen time he was an honorable character and I don't think you can hate him for that. People may say he didn't do anything but for me he was the spark of the story to come to life.

Shura is not really in my rank 1 but between  1 and 2 nevertheless I didn't know where to place him. Even if he mortally wounded Aioros and even though he was fighting for Saga and not for Athena, after seeing Shiryu's strong resolve, he reverted his loyalty back to Athena and saved Shiryu from dying. Shiryu's suicide attack would not have killed Shura and only Shiryu would have been dead. Shura would have won, instead he protected him. A true hero in my opinion.

Rank 2

Aldebaran a Saint that has strong sense of protecting others. He is kind and even let the L5 pass with a test instead of trying to kill them like the others have. That being said he is another character that you really cannot hate however Masami having the notion of making the Taurus Saints big and weak as well as any other towering character is disappointing and predictable. Other than that, he should have had more character building, it was pretty bland.

Deathmask sometimes you have to see the character as an actual character and not if he a good person. Sure he is the very contradiction of being a Gold Saint but a personality such as he was bound to happen. He is the first "evil" Gold Saint they confront and in a battle of the 12 temples is supposed to look like that. A bit of exaggeration tho since among all the Gold Saints he looked as if he was the most evil of all. Not even Saga was like that. His temple screams signs of death and creepiness, a sadistic personality that just loved the screams of women and children and that he would kill just about anyone without remorse. Enjoys to to torture the weaker ones etc etc...he is the epitome of evil. Hoe many times have I mentioned evil? lol anyway I like this controversy about a character and later in the story he appeared to be still a bad guy under Shion's leadership even though he was still acting to be...good actor. :P

Shaka A dude that is strong and according to fandom he is the strongest Gold Saint (whatever guys). He has the largest collection of techniques (see what I did there?), he has  this crazy ideal of strong being justice...which is absurd in every way you see it. He is a dick most of the times and in my opinion...take into consideration what I have mentioned earlier...a false sense of justice. Other than being Athena's escort in the Underworld, I can't say he has done anything truly to deserve my attention. Perhaps being the strongest Virgo and the wikipedia of the Gold Saints...He may actually being in the bottom of the rank 2... Ok maybe, succeeding to fool everyone that he was dead was a pretty good trick. That's it.

Milo nothing much that I can say about this guy besides being another stock character and baptizing Kanon as Gold Saint...but for some reason I just can't place him with Dohko...weird huh?

Camus I have sort of mixed feelings about him. He is a cold character...just because he wields ice? ...eh whatever, he is a double agent Gold Saint...he knew who the Pope was and played the game...he was the neutral  Gold Saint, I don't think he cared much about anything what was going on.  That's my opinion about him. Only Saga knew that Camus was aware of Saga's existence. Deathmask, Shura and Aphrodite didn't know that Camus knew about it which makes you to start thinking...why did he act the way he did? We will never find out....but honestly that's one of the parts that I liked about him...the mysterious Gold Saint but my theory is that he just didn't want to be part of Saga's scheme but didn't want to go against him either (possibly afraid of him?).

Aphrodite being one of the Gold Saints that followed Saga and knew that Athena was the real Athena and not just an impostor, a total narcissist you may say you don't like him. He was part of Shion's army and acted as a bad guy...another good actor.  Pretty cool character if you ask me just wish there was more about him.

Rank 3

Dohko for someone who has fought with Shion and being the one with Misopethamenos, it feels that he didn't do much in my point of view. His status is not shown in the series. He didn't do much and I expected a great deal of him...in contradiction with Shion who was just brilliant.  I have nothing else to say...he was not enough to get my attention.

1. Virgo Shaka = I actually didn’t care for him until the Hades arc. Not to get too deep into this but about five years back I had a sudden deep realization that one day I’m biting the dust and since then every single living day was a horrible experience. Life seemed pointless and I didn’t think I was ever going to get over it (I managed to eventually so yay) but Shaka’s contemplation about that issue made me emphasize strongly with him, so now he’s my favorite. I also think he’s super badass and powerful.

2. Pisces Aphrodite =
He’s very pretty and I adore him. I also find his ideals and his reasoning of justice interesting. People knock down points for not walking in the path of proper good justice but I actually give him more points for that. I have a preference for villainous characters just as people have a preference for noble ones, though I can see where they’re coming from in disliking him.

3. Cancer Deathmask = Very unique. Unapologetic and terrible but I found him amusing and interesting. (I’m also biased because my husband is Cancer) I can see him being redeemable as a Saint of Athena (not that it would automatically make him a better person) but I do wonder how he became one in the first place with his morals. Lastly, I didn’t like the complete 180 he had in SOG. As stated before though I can see him being redeemed perhaps even that sincerely but it was too quick and too drastic.

4. Gemini Saga = He’s a very cool antagonist and I think his Another Dimension technique was one of the neatest animated attacks aside from Shaka. (I joke that his attacks were an 80s aesthetic).

5. Aries Mu = Look. He’s… really really cute ok. Besides that I love how indifferent and condescending he is.

6. Taurus Aldebaren: I’m somewhat indifferent to him as the series went on but I liked his first appearance and was very fond of him when Mu remarked what a softie he was for holding back on Seiya and the others.

7. Shion and Dohko = aren’t really my favs but I think their friendship is endearing so I’m placing them here in the same bracket.

The rest below I don’t particularly care about. I don’t dislike them but they’re not really my favs either (save for Leo and Camus, explained in a bit)

8.  Sagittarius Aiolos = I’m indifferent to him but he gets major points for his loyalty and all the BS he had to put up with while rolling in his grave.

9. Scorpio Milo =
It’s mixed. I found his quickness to fight with other goldies annoying at first but now I find it amusing. I also kinda liked him in Episode G.

10. Capricorn Shura = It isn’t that I’m indifferent to him so much as I literally keep forgetting he exists. I guess I find him pretty boring?

11. Kanon. =
Same as Shura. I kinda just keep forgetting about him (not as bad though because I literally keep forgetting Shura even exists)

12.  Leo Aiolia = I find him boring at best, annoying at worst. He grinded my beans when he told those kids running away “hey go back to the pope, I’m sure he’ll forgive you :)” then didn’t move a single muscle when the other saints killed them. I also found his brother drama annoying. (I actually like him in Episode G though??)

13. Aquarius Camus =
Oh boy. Okay. I know a lot of people love Camus so I apologize beforehand but I really really don’t like him. At all. I hated his bogus reasoning “I love you so much I’d rather kill you myself instead of the other gold saints :’(” and I absolutely despised how he desecrated the grave of Hyoga’s mother to ‘toughen him up’ and I don’t care how much the series justifies this.

I hate how he pushes that Hyoga “should lock up his emotions” and most of all he honestly makes me feel uneasy! It makes me feel extremely disturbed how quick Hyoga was to cling to him despite all of the negative interactions so far, how he desperately saw Camus as a father figure when he was broken and literally had nothing left. (it feels a bit stockholm syndrome-ish if that makes sense?)

And while I can actually see people liking him despite that, he just makes me VERY uncomfortable. It hits too close to home for me.

Now this viewpoint has been since a while back and lately I’ve actually been pretty indifferent to him doing his own thing and hanging around but he needs to stay 100000 feet away from Hyoga. Along the tolerance, I think his relationship with Milo is very amusing.

Oh wow, someone that actually likes Aphrodite and Deathmask. Not that there's a problem I love those two, as well. I do now, anyway. I think there might have been a time where they kind of annoyed me. But now to be honest I love them for who they are. I'm just surprised to see that someone likes them XD

Ok, I am going to try to answer all of your points which I may forget a few along the way so....

First of all, I understand you like villainous guys as opposed to good guys. That is of course accepted however, Gold Saints are supposed to be the good guys and having traitors and stuff like that will get mixed feelings for those characters. I repeat, Gold Saints are the good guys... they are not Hades' Specters which come on they all respected and fear their God... but then again you may like the controversy of having bad guys in a good army...okay moving on.

Aldebaran was one of the good guys of course he wouldn't want the L5 to die. I find his way of letting them pass the most REASONABLE and quite frankly that's how it should be instead of the Gold Saints trying to kill their comrades just because they want an audience with the Pope.

For Aioria I am sorry but...when did that happen? I don't really remember something like that taking place.

As for Camus...have you ever thought that he was trying to pass Aurora Execution to Hyoga? It is quite possible that this technique can only be mastered the way it happened.  It happened on quite a few other Japanese series so...not impossible. Camus could also have acted the way he did in order for Hyoga to strike him. Camus is a mysterious character (why do Japanese always connect Ice with Mystery I still don't know), however we can make speculations of the way he has acted.

I do want to keep on but... it is your personal choice and everyone is entitled to it. :)

For Aiolia, it was a bunch of kids running away from the Sanctuary and he intercepted them, but then Perseus Algol turned them into stone. It was a flashback during Shiryu's fight with Algol.

Lol, I had no idea that Japanese had that connection. That might be why the Aquarius Saint in ND was named Mystoria?

More I know of Gold Saint's, or any given character's, background = more I probably find their inner struggles, and methods they are going to use to solve those, interesting. And if I find their personality's and reaction's balance, or imbalance, either way, furthermore interesting, I probably end up liking at least some aspects of those characters. That, I think, is at the heart of the matter for me, in this topic.

Because it is pretty hard for me to actually dislike character if I have idea where his decisions came from. And hell, I disagree lot with decision made in this series by multiple characters but what I think is not point. Point is, if the character had rhyme and reason to think and act as they do, or hadn't.

Saint Seiya isn't awfully complicated series, but it is not without it's fair share of implications. Those give sweet hints how to try to fill those pesky gaps in characters, but when you are lazy trash such as myself, it makes also hard to distinguish what was canon and what was pet interpretation of the fandom.

To me there are basically two kinds of gold saints. Those dudes and already know something about, wouldn't mind knowing more, but I'm not holding my breath. And those dinguses we know frustratingly little , beyond their tropey image. Former group is pretty cool, latter group makes my head hurt because I would like to like them, but I'm not desperate enough to delve into world of SS spinoff titles. (Drakengard is only title I am willing to suffer enless guidebook mining from, than you.)

So, everyone is fucking great, but Aldebaran, Deathmask, Aphrodite, Shura... hmm, I guess Milo too - like, can I know more about you, so you would start feeling like fleshed out characters finally?

Shared topspot goes to Dohko, Mu and Aiolia. I love seeing those guys getting involved in plot, though it is bronze boys' show. Goldies all around, are pretty badass supporting crew, in history of supporting crews in anime.

i agree with your list although i would put dohko and shaka higher on it, and yeah saga was probably the strongest of his generation but he probably also was one of the strongest since the age of myth, shaka would also join the list of one of the strongest since the age of myth.
