Good Things about Saga's Realm
« on: June 15, 2015, 03:39:21 PM »
Just thought it would be interesting to start a topic about Saga's time as the Pope but, instead of focusing on the bad, I thought it would be a much better exercise to pitch in stuff you believe Saga did well for Sanctuary, evil or not. :saga-robe:

Here, I'll start:
-Filled the Army: By the time the Galaxian wars began, not only were most living Gold Saints still loyal, but the Silver and Bronze Ranks of sanctuary were filled with young soldiers way too fresh to have been there thirteen years earlier, which proves Saga not only kept the Golden Zodiac relatively intact, but he also took the time to bring lots of new blood to Athena's lower forces. There is also no apparent shortage of foot soldiers, either.

-Sanctuary didn't fall apart: Even though Saga killed the Pope and Aiolos, brainwashed half the Golden Zodiac, allowed Gigars to become minister and usurped the throne, Sanctuary is still standing by the time the Galaxian Wars started.

-B*tchin' Pool Parties: Ever since Saga took power, the number of 'holy festivities' in the Pope's pool had risen, like, a thousand percent. Male participants were mostly excluded, however.

That point about Sanctuary not colapsing under his rule.  Hell, if you just take the manga's version of events into account, he did a pretty good job.

Of course, one has to assume this is because his good side was mainly in control during these times.  Then again, his evil side could've been fine with what Saga was doing as long as they were in power.

If you take into account where Saga talks to his other self claims they were created by the Gods, Saga is a puppet... That's the ironic story element. Kanon uses Poseidon as a puppet and they both have the skills to control people's minds to do their bidding but they are a puppet in the first place...

Evil Saga's goals required him to stay undercover as long as possible until he could get what he needed (Athena's Nike Staff), so there was no issue with letting Saga's good side enjoy the good parts of being the Pope. Of course, he killed anyone who caught up, so some suspicions were starting to be raised. Athena setting up the Galaxian Tournament was the perfect opportunity to send Saints after Athena to have her captured without raising too much suspicion (Saints were forbidden from having personal battles like that after all).

Which makes the anime decision to have the old pope die and to be replaced by his "Evil Brother Arles" or whatever it was make absolutely no sense.
