SSF member activity research - forum is dying?
« on: May 25, 2015, 04:14:42 PM »
I've been making a bit of calculations on member activity. ...My hand and wrist hurt a bit now (still recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome). XD I discovered something surprising... out of people who registered last year and this year, only 28% are active and posting. NOT EVEN 30%. This forum is dead, people.

List of all members per registration year, and when they left (or if they're still active)

Surprising data?

In 2007, 8 of the 104 members left during their registration year. This is 8%.
In 2008, 13 of the 59 members left during their registration year. This is 22%.
In 2009, 26 of the 78 members left during their registration year. This is 33%.

In 2012, 54 of the 78 members left during their registration year. This is 69%.
In 2013, 56 of the 86 members left during their registration year. This is 65%.
In 2014, 52 of the 65 members left during their registration year. This is 80%.
In 2015, 2 members haven't posted since January; 3 members haven't posted since February; 2 members haven't posted since March; 4 members haven't posted since April; and 34 have no posts at all. Out of the 55 registrations, this means 62% haven't even posted while 82% all in all haven't posted in May.

Anyone have any theories as for WHY exactly 2011 had so many new members quit? 2012, 2013 and 2014 aren't any better. ...Everything started going downhill in 2010 with half of the newly registered members gone. 2008 was a good year; 2009 wasn't so bad; but ever since then, the forums have been dying a slow death. Only 13% of the entire userbase is active.[/spoiler]

These percentages would probably get a lot better if somebody purged the forums of old accounts that have less than 10 posts. XD (Considering 10 posts is a minimum for you to be considered an active part of the community.)

PS. Discussion encouraged~ How on earth did these percentages happen? Does it have something to do with the releases of the manga and anime series? How do we get people to actually stay and post? ...Would a purge as detailed above fix the percentages?

One guess I have is that a lot of the original members when the forum first started left because there was a gap between the hades arc and omega and people thought that there would be no more saint seiya after hades arc so they felt that there was nothing else to talk about or that with Next Demension that isn't coming out on a regular basis that there wasn't much to talk about with that.  It could be also that people were disappointed with recent things that happened with Saint Seiya.

Another Guess I have is that some people are going to school and are in a program that requires a lot of focuse and a lot of people are stuck with work probably that is a reason why some people post every couple of days.

I notice too that some of the members that are active don't post anything they just look at the forum. I am also wondering why those inactive accounts haven't been deleting if they aren't on here anymore

I suppose it's a mix of lack of interest towards the newer StS' serieses, increase in places on the internet where to find scans/episodes, lack of time and life generally catching up. Over in my forum, I find that older people who grew up with classic Saint Seiya were generally happier to discuss the series at lenght, until something happened (marriage or kids, usually) and they couldn't anymore. On the other hand, most (albeit definitely not all) younger fans tend to register to find scans or links, or on a whim, or are put off by the mostly negative attitude towards more recent products.

I'm still kind of curious where Shaina falls on the spectrum. She was one of the older members - in fact, she was right here founding this very forum and was one of the admins - and then one day in 2010, she just stopped posting and in 2011 disappeared completely.

I haven't been able to find her online ever since. Shaina is a computer teacher so there should at least be a FEW traces of her online... there are none, which just made alarm bells ring in my head. See, Shaina and her dad both had some health issues and if anything happened to either of them... yeah, I've been kind of worried for the past four years.

Me too, and I've known her since about the late 90s, through her saint-seiya.de website, possibly the very first Saint Seiya website I've ever visited. Last I heard of her, she was battling severe depression, but I'm hopeful she's ok as long as her website is still up. It hasn't been updated since 2009, but domains usually require yearly renewals so someone must be paying to keep it from being removed.

I actually checked out her website recently, and it reads 1996-2010 at the bottom. Which means it actually hasn't been renewed in five years.

This all most likely ties with the fact that there hasn't been a lot of new content as of late. Also, Saint Seiya was never a very controversial or discussion-raising topic in the first place compared to other franchises. You could say that half the stuff out there regarding Naruto are about pairing wars or plotholes, but even it may be a bad type of discussion, it's discussion nonetheless.

I was actually hoping Soul of Gold would bring back some activity, but I think even Omega spurred some more life into the forum, probably because of how divisive it could be in certain things. Once of the first things some guys I meet at fanfiction.net talk to me about is how they can't fully love or hate Omega. They're always 'I really hate this and that, but at least this other thing was ok..." and I think this attitude was probably healthier for the activity in the forum than good ol' con-sensuality.

I never got to meet Shaina but I've heard of her and seen a couple of her posts in some of the older topics. I've, in fact, wondered for a while where did she disappeared to even though I registered long after she was gone. Hopefully she's fine, but unless she confirms it herself...

I'm not sure a purge would 'fix' the percentages (unless your goal is simply make them look better); it would, however, help with security as it's less holes in the forum.  (I work IT for a living; take that with a grain of salt, if you will.)

I would agree with the above, so there's not much else to add.  School, work, and life in general sometimes get in the way, and it really hurts that SS SD is coming out so seldom.  (Soul of Gold comes out more often, and it's biweekly.  Many anime series are weekly.)  Also, with the series not making a big splash in the United States, there really isn't much to drive viewership here in my opinion.  Crunchyroll may be showing the series, but they're not -advertising- that they're showing the series.  I'm not sure if the next gen of viewers would be into such an old-school series, compared to some of the newer material.  I dunno.  I'm somewhat out of touch with the recent trends in anime and manga.

*edit*  Really?  I'm one of 2 people active from 2011?  Wow.  o_o  I feel....privileged?  lol

I don't understand why Saint Seiya wasn't introduced to the US until 2003 or 2004 and even I never heard of it until 2011 because its not big here. Maybe if it was introduced during the time period when Saint Seiya was introduced to other countries then maybe it would of been more popular then again too that anime isn't a big thing in the states and you are considered a nerd for liking it. Probably the anime that is popular here is if it is a huge hit in Japan (One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto). But hey at least Saint Seiya is very popular in Europe and Latin American I don't know about Japan though.

Another thing I have to add about the forum is that most of the time I see more guests than users. I am wondering if it was required to look at posts on here maybe we would have more members

From what I remember the forum was most busy when LC main manga was drawn. I think it went downhill after the main manga ended. The ending of LC main manga I have serious problems with. It felt like Masami or editors told her to draw the ending instead of a proper ending to LC.

Then, Omega happened, it was busy for a while and then after seeing the show for what it is, just a pointless show with no real depth to it. More people left.(Bandai reharsh and fucking people ending the Appendix line did not help things. Video game scams... errr....)

Even with all that, as I already mentioned, the nail on the coffin was ND... Legend of Sanctuary, Heroes of Heroes is even more pointless.

SOG right now is a bright light in a pool of shit...

I used to check deviantArt from time to time, but even here Shaina seems to have stopped posting anything. With no news, I choose to hope for the best.

And as for me, I'm one of the examples of those who left the forum because there was too much things to do, to pass the exams, then the inspections as a teacher, and get all the lessons and test prepared for different classes (and then correct the tests...). It's only this year that I find some free time, now that I'm getting used to my job. But after 6 whole years of complete inactivity, I guess there's not much people coming back as I did.

Maybe if it was introduced during the time period when Saint Seiya was introduced to other countries

It depends on the countries you're referring to, because some countries had the series aired at the very beginning of the 90s. And each time I watch Sts I remember the good days of my childhood (I can say the same for some other animes like Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball, even Hokuto no Ken in its terribly censured version, but StS remains my top favourite).

SOG right now is a bright light in a pool of shit...

A bright golden light... It's sad that you're so right (at least in my opinion).

From what I remember the forum was most busy when LC main manga was drawn. I think it went downhill after the main manga ended.

That's what I thought as well, things went downhill after LC ended. In the first place this forum was formed long after the main Saint Seiya series ended. The franchise was revived with the simultaneous starts of Lost Canvas and Next Dimension, but that achievement (and burden) lied mainly on LC because of ND's pacing. That was also around the time this and (to my knowledge) a couple of other forums were formed. There wasn't much else going around that time except Hades OVAs which first released in 2002 and then two more with years apart, and Episode G manga which had started to have much slower pacing around that time. The LC manga ended in 2011 which agrees with Raiden's observation. Beside, here used to be the source for English LC and ND scans as well as Hades subs. So, after LC ended there were just ND and Ep. G to sustain new contents, but then Toei wanted to keep the franchise going and made Omega and after awhile other spin-offs followed.

I tended to be very active for a little while and then went away for a few months to almost year and then returned to being very active again. That was repeated several times. I do have to say that the recent I'm quite consistently active now is partially because I was rather concerned about the decline.

PS. IIRC the chat started dying around late 2012 to somewhere in 2013.

It means it hasn't been updated with new content, but it's got to have been renewed, or it would have been deleted from the servers. Domains cost a yearly fee. Unless she has set up an automatic renewal contract (which by itself would imply a still-functioning credit card or bank account), someone is paying to keep it active, even if new content is no longer added.

A change in technology can affect it too. Back then, if people wanted to talk about a fandom or find people, message boards were the prime place. Now you have twitter and facebook. People also started moving away from laptops to smartphones. I don't know about anyone else but chat doesn't display on it and I hate typing on it.
