Lord of The RIngs is too complicated for me. Too manyw ars. Too many characters. I even get dizzy form watching its 2nd installment movie. I like the 1st one better.

I guess LOTR is too sophisticated for me. All I know, the 1st movie is good and it certainly brings me to fantasy land, esp the beginning about the hobbit village. The 2nd movie almost cracks my head open. Too complicated. I dont recall how many war but when I see the 2nd movie, it seems like a medieval war movie. I can only see war in my head. That's why I wrote 'many wars'. As for the 3rd movie, since it's ending, I like it. Too bad Gollum died :D Wanna keep one as a pet ^_^ If u ask me to read LOTR books, I will hv to say no. Too heavy for my brain ^_^

Actually, there aronly three 'battles' in the movies: 1 at the end of the second movie and 2 in the third. I liked both the movies and the books (both in a different way).
What else? Errr...

Ann Rice and her Vampire Chronicles (have only read 2 so far, but making my way towards the third ;D)
I like the different characters and perspective on the story. Sometimes everything happens a little too slow for my taste, but it's still nice.

Crystal Dynamics and their 'Legacy of Kain'-series (more vampires, humm...)
What can I say: all time favourite... Brilliant character design, nice story, ...

Star Wars (mainly due to memories) if this can be considered 'fantasy'. I mostly like the 'expanded universe', pe: stories not written by Lucas about characters not necessarily appearing in the movies.
Favourites: 'Legacy of the Force' - series and 'Knights of the Old Republic' - series

Everything written by Francois Marcela-Froideval (Mainly 'Black Moon Chronicles') or drawn by Ledroit (Again, 'Black Moon Chronicles', but also 'Requiem')
He tells the story of the 'bad guys', something that is rarily done imo.

If I think of anything else, I'll mention it :).

I am a big fan of Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles.  XD
Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer
Any vampire series that doesn't portray vampires as monsters
Dragon Sword and Wind Child by Noriko Ogiwara
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
Animorphs by K.A. Applegate <- can't forget the good ol' childhood days

I know there's more... just can't remember them as of the moment

I'm a coward, because I love you too much to let you go.

I just got into Angie Sage's "Septimus Heap" series, but the second book seems boring unlike the first one. .____. Evil!Simon pisses me off so bad I just want to scream at him and punch him in the face.

I also got the second installment in Guy Gavriel Kay's "Fionavar Tapestry" series for a discount in a bookstore. =3 Let's see if it's any better than Tigana (which was boring as hell, period.).

I also visited the library and got "Dragon Tamers: Reality Goes Virtual" by Emma Maree Urquhart, because it seemed interesting... let's see if it is.

Also planning to finish "A Song of Ice and Fire: Clash of Kings" and "Lands of Autumn: The Wine Merchant" (this is only in Finnish, so don't bother looking for it).

My current favorite series is Clare Bell's "The Named" series. I have read volumes 1 - 4. Just got Ratha's Courage as an early Christmas present last week. Gotta start reading the book. :)

I thought I would revive the old thread and see what people have been reading lately.

Some stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet:

- Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clark - twisty Victorian magic
- Wizard of the Crow by Ngugi wa Thiongo - black ju-ju and modern African corruption - really different and exotic
- Tales of the Otori series by Lian Hearn - classical japanese samourai saga
- The Scar by China Mieville - very very weird and very cool
- The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch - classic heist story meets fantasy - great tongue-in-cheek humor too - Red Seas Over Red Skies (the sequel) isn't bad either
- The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss - great writing style and original characters - can't wait for book 2
- The First Law triology by Joe Abercrombie - dark, cynical, gritty, violent and sooo much fun - absolutely loved it

- For those of you who speak French, I would highly recommend La Horde du Contrevent - it blew me away - so unique and touching and incredibly well written.

Anyone else care to recommend some recent fantasy reads?

Man, I only do children's or YA fantasy, I don't understand why.  I just feel like they're better than adult.  Some more of my favorites, though I don't recall the authors:

The Bartimaeus Trilogy
The Fire Thief series
The Secrets of Droon series

Alot of mine have been listed already so I'll only post the ones I've not seen anyone else post so far.

The Elric Saga by Micheal Moorcock
The Tarzan series by Edgar Rice Burroughs
John Carter Of Mars By Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Pellucidar series also by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Tales of Ffard and the Grey Mauser by Fritz Leiber
The Conan stories by Robert Erwin Howard
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
The Chronicles of Oz by L. Frank Baum
Many of the stories written by Gu Long
Many of the stories written by Jin Yong

I count those last two as historical fantasy because while they do take place in China, the kind of things that go on in those stories are far too fantastical to be simply called fiction.  I've also only read what has been translated into english, which hasn't been much unfortunately.
"Pss, hey Guido, its all so clear to me now. I'm the keeper of the cheese and you're the lemon merchant, you get it? And he knows it. That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it, ya, before he let's loose the marmosets on us. Don't worry little missy, I'll save you!!!"
