This rules out Catalonia because Catalonia comes from the word Catalunya which derives from the term "Land of Castle".

Yep, the ethymology of the name differs (though there are various theories, not only the one about "Land of Castles"). On the other hand, wise Wiki says that the inland parts of Catalonia are pretty hot and dry during the summer - I assume there is plenty of heat in there ^^

Anyway - sure, it's better to wait for more clues

Certainly, the fact that she used these kanji proved something, and as to the nature of the city itself too. But maybe she chose to give that particular reading to the word so as to evoke the name "Catalonia". Since Spain seems to be a big favorite among readers' guesses, it would be sensible.

That only works if Catalonia or anything of the like has something to do with sun or flame and heat in the meanings. There's plenty of places in Spain that is hot and with heat. Why it has to be Catalonia...? It's a little forced. We need more info either way.

Also having a colosseum doesn't mean anything either. The Roman Empire was vast. And there's colosseums and the like in Greece and Turkey too... The obvious fact that she didn't use the katakana for Catalonia and the like and that the city rose up in one night give us that, that is more to the story...

Like I said, we need more clues to pin down the exact region. I do agree it is in Spain though...
