Well the Pokemon anime is technically anime. It's still on Japanese TV years after its debut.

Should have asked me this 5 years ago. *sigh* Here we go. Come on, brain. Remember. Okay, it was either Speed Racer, Pokemon, or DBZ. *Exhales* Done. It was definitely one of those 3. ... Or maybe it was *head explodes*

First one I watched knowing it was anime was Akira when it first hit. Well, I guess Robotech made me aware of anime, so in the midst of watching the Robotech versions of macross, southern cross, mospeada I became aware I was watching anime.
before that i watched all the Voltron, Tranzor Z, Transformers, G-Force stuff in the 70s and 80s Thundercats was animated by a Japanese company (just like the new one is animated by 4 Degrees Celsius), so, even tho IMDB counts it as Amereican production, I consider it essentially anime, too.

Putting a bit more thought into it, I think it was probably either glimpses of Sailor Moon from my babysitter's house or Maya the Honey Bee. ... But, It was probably not SM, because I think DBZ was on CN before SM. So... Maya.

A kinda obscure movie, no one else I know seems to have seen it. Ringing Bell. Might also be called Bell of Chirin. Its about a sweet little lamb that ends up going a dark quest for vengeance.
For me too, the first thing I watched knowing what anime is, was Akira. It was cool. ^^
