@whateverwinnie

The vowels in German are very similar to the vowels in Latin, Italian or Japanese with the following exceptions:

- au  (like in English "loud")
- ie (like in English "see")
- ei / ai (like in English "shine")
- eu / äu (like in English "soy")
- ä (like in English "fan")
- ö (like in French "feu")
- ü (like in French "sur")
Every vowel followed by "h" is a long vowel

@Winnie: *blush* thanks...I really love language, regardless of the fact that I'm studying engineering.  I actually don't know that much, since I'm only good at English and Chinese, but I'm trying.  ^^  I actually just know a lot ABOUT Chinese dialect, since my mom loves that sort of thing.  She knows Shanghainese and Jiangxi dialect (from Hexi village), and can speak with a degree of proficiency in my grandma's Shandong Dialect.  My mom also imitates a lot of accents/dialects.  Anyway, so I guess I know more about them than I do how to use them.  ^^ But it's nice to find another Chinese speaker!  你住在东南亚吗?

@whateverwinnie: Err.. Indonesian is singing? :D I dont think so :) Indonesian speak their words plainly without any additional sounds. Maybe it's just my feeling, but when I see malaysian talking, I get a feeling that they exert their jaws too much. As if they emphasize too much on the words. And I also get the feleing that Malaysian loves turning A into E. Like "Ke mana" -where - sounds like "ke manE"

Wow.  so many languages going on now. ^.^  I want to know latin, japanese, indonesian and malaysian now.  Sanskrit seems pretty cool too.  I'm not a big fan on spanish, french or german though...  what I've heard of german is they always sound so angry.  I listen to this one band E-Nomine and I thought the main singer was a big burly guy.  Turned out once I seen pictures of him, he wasn't.  And I was never interested in french or spanish...  I love how the british say 'bloody' and their accent. XD

@Mel

German sounds "angry" in your ears? That's interesting. I have never heard anyone saying it sounds "angry" before.

My best friend thinks Italian sounds angry.  I don't know.  I guess it's all a matter of perception.

I don't think I've EVER heard a language I didn't like, wasn't interested in learning, or that didn't sound really cool.  But that's me, and I'm obsessed with languages.  Heck, I'd learn Zulu if I had the chance.  Swahili first though.  They have the awesome tongue clicks.

If  German sounds 'angry', what does Dutch sound? Klingon? Oh... wait... it does sound like Klingon... Bad example, sorry. ;D

Italian? That's the romantic language after French! Although all those 'iii's are hard to take.

British! British! British! Now that's a decent language! ;D

Italian is a beautiful musical language - soundwise I prefer it to French. And about sounding Klingon - you could put "Schwyzerdytsch" there, too, I'd say.

Is it German or Dutch (I'd say German, but not sure...)?

It's the Swiss variety of German. :)

I want to learn more languages too, Mostly Japanese and Italian, since Italian is becoming a must for me. I really should have learned it before I met the family.

And you think German is weird.  Today in chemistry they taught us how to write coordination compounds, like cis-Tetraamminediaquacobalate nitrate. And other stuff just as cool.

Apparently the German method of making compound words caught on in chemistry world.  ^^

LOL. I can see that people used to put spaces into compounds are easily intimidated by that XD

yeah... german sounds angry to me...  Don't know why.  And I haven't heard much Dutch or any of the others to tell if they sound angry or not.  But I like Irish and Swedish.  Those sound pretty to me.

Well, personally, when I make compounds, I still stick to using dash-compounds when appropriate.  I think it looks better, and helps with comprehension.  Another Briticism that is not often used here in the US anymore.
