@LabbulLuca: Well, the constellation is indeed ordinary-looking. Just a man pouring water from a big vase (although many likes to change it to a girl). Although Aquarius doesn't depict men kissing each other or men making love with each other, the story about Aquarius is indeed gay one. Did u read the whole posts in this thread? Cheesy

The Greeks have heard the story of Ganymede pouring drinks for the gods. So maybe when they looked at the stars, they see, 'Hei, those stars look like someone pouring water. They remind me of Ganymede who was Zeus' secret gay lover. Hey, why dont we call it Aquarius, the water bearer? Just like Ganymede bears drinks for the gods!'

Something like that ^_^

Well, I assume it is more that the water connection came from Euphratean or the Egyption time when this constellation first was named - there it was only "Water" after all. The water bearer came later.

@LabbulLuca: Cheesy Yup. Aquarius is a guy named Ganymede. Zeus' gay lover. That's why one of planet Jupiter's moons is called Ganymede. As we know, Jupiter is Roman term for Zeus.

Indeed that the gay myth Ganymede came later... Previously Aquarius was also identified as the pourer of the waters which flooded the earth in the Great Flood, in the ancient Greek version of the myth. The constellation Eridanus was sometimes identified as being a river poured out by Aquarius.

It may also, together with the constellation Pegasus, be part of the origin of the myth of the Mares of Diomedes, which forms one of The Twelve Labours of Heracles. Its association with pouring out rivers, and the nearby constellation of Capricornus, may be the source of the myth of the Augean stable, which forms another of the labours.

But the gay myth is more accepted as the 'real' story behind Aquarius Smiley

I'm an Aquarius but I don't want to think of my constellation as "gay". It makes me think that I'm "gay" in a way which does not satisfy me at all. I want to be "clean". camus

Well, who doesn't love myths? Curiosity mostly always get the better of me. I've read a lot of Greek mythology before so I know the story of Aquarius pretty well.
