Notice that Tenma is already there, shaking hand probably with Teneo so it does happen 2 years ago.  And Defteros might had seen Tenma before while peeping on the new trainees.

As to why others outside the Gold Saints might not had known of what Aspros did, guess they (the Gold Saints and high-ranked guards) had to keep it hush-hush as what will others think if they heard a Gold Saint trying to kill the Pope?
If Hakurei had to keep the death of Sage a secret, why not what Aspros did, especially that it happened at the start of the Holy War?

Heh, maybe it's just like the "problem" of Hypnos' Hair. While doing my research on him for my cosplay, one moment his hair is Short, the next long. And same goes with how his and Alone's Coat closes, one moment Left-Over Right, the next Right-over-Left.

Somehow I think Sage would be much more clear of mind than to allow such actions to a potential saint, hell to anyone.
