This anime is really good and I'm quite surprised that I didn't notice it when it first began in 2004. Check out the description here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_%28manga%29

Yeah, yeah, I know, I was quite rude about it so I apologize.

Monster's very cool, but I've never seen the anime and wonder how faithful it is to the source material...?

I guess it'd need someone who'd seen both. >_>

I'm watching it now. While not filled with bishounen it seems the plot and characters are worth watching.

*laughs at Gomess avatar* XD

While I haven't personally seen them both, I heard someone else say that the anime is good and not screwed up compared to the manga.

It's an amazing anime.

The best description I could give you is this: Imagine Silence of the Lamb (Anthony Hopkins) mixed with The Fugitive (Harrison Ford), set in germany. It feels and flows like a western movie. And it has one of the most disturbing villans ever.

The anime follows the manga very closely, so closely that it feels almost like a copy-paste sometimes. What amazes me is that I never grew bored of the opening for all 72 episodes.

This is a great comparison. Some exchanges between Tenma and Johan really do echo Clarice and Hannibal.

I'd recommend this series to anyone who can appreciate a story more realistic than most anime. Especially people who dig True Crime books/series and detective shows like Law and Order SVU.

Now that I'm finished, I'll say its very good. Johan is one of the more interesting characters I've seen lately.

Urasawa Naoki has done several interesting manga titles. Pineapple Army was the first one that I was introduced to thanks to the VIZ release in the late 1980's. I've read a couple of his other series, including this one, but my hands down favorite is still Yawara! So far only the first season of the anime has ever been released here in the United States. Nothing else. Sadly, AnimEigo was unable to licenses the rest of the series and no one has translated and released the manga. Sad

Oh well, at least I have the Japanese release.
