Is Hades a God or just the ruler of the underworld (or both possibly). I always thought of him just being a ruler, and Thanatos being the god of death. Anyways, i used to watch the anime back when i was 10yrs old. And just recently picked it up again (had to move countries and the country i moved to didnt air it). But alas, thanks to the internet, i can (and have. finally, after 12 years) cought up.

In Greek mythology Hades is one of the major Gods as he is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. He is the ruler of the underworld, too, and the name of the underworld as Hades is just an abbreviation for "the House of Hades". Hypnos and Thanatos are both Gods, too, but none of the major Gods.
Topic moved to Mythology. Hades Inferno stuff split and merged into http://saintseiyafan.com/Forum/index.php?topic=1242.0

Im not sure but maybe sleep is associated indirectly with death? I mean, don't we ever hear phrases like 'sleeping forever' ? Maybe since sleeping and dying look similar, the greeks made story about Hypnos and Thanotos. Sleep and death together... It's just a guess. I dont have any 'scientific' proof ^_^

@Labbul Luca: Yes, Hades also means the underworld. Although Im not sure which inspired which. I mean, whether the Hades god's name inspired the Hades underworld word OR the Hades underworld inspired the name of that god.

I guess Hades didn't really have a chance to protest.. I'm not sure now, but wasn't it that Zeus, Poseidon and Hades drew lots and Hades got the underworld, Poseidon got sea and Zeus heaven? And the two did rebel, especially Poseidon, but eventually gave up and accepted what they got?

@Shiraoi: Im not sure about it either All I remember Zeus divided the areas. Being a god of underworld is cool, too, although u dont get to strike people down with thunderbolts It's just interesting that although the underworld is associated with death, Hades asked Thanatos to act as angel of death? Maybe coz taking lives from people is a 'low' job? And Hades wants to act like a 'king'?

Hades is the god of the underworld and Thanatos is the god of death. Death and underworld are two different things. A person who is alive can travel to the underworld but death is only for the dead.
