This had been on my mind for a while now but does the dragon and pheonix constellation really exist? It does not seem to fit in with the zodiac, pegasus, unicorn, etc

Yes, they do exist. Draco (Dragon) was already existent at the time of Ptolemaeus in ancient Greece, while Phoenix was created by Bayer in the year 1603. Here is an overview about the constellations: http://stayka.homelinux.net/seiya/texte/const/st-const.html

Yeah, up until now, I was pretty sure they'd made up some constalations just because the animals would make good cloths or whatever. Sheesh.. that cleared me up.

Well... there are some invented cloths, i.e., not corresponding to constellations. But those are only a few... From the top of my head I can recall the Fire Screw dude, the Peacock, Lotus, Crystal, Tarantula, Spartan, Docrates, Leda and Spica.

@VF: Err... u made a BIG mistake about the Peacock. It IS a constellation. It's called PAVO, and is very close to constelation Indus.
Pavo (pronounced /ˈpeɪvoʊ/, Latin: peacock) is a southern constellation. The constellation was one of twelve constellations created by Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman between 1595 and 1597, and it first appeared in Johann Bayer's Uranometria of 1603.
In Australia "the Saucepan" is sometimes used as an informal name for part of the constellation of Pavo, when finding the south by the stars.
The most famous star in the constellation is δ Pavonis, a nearby Sun-like but more evolved star. φ2 Pavonis, another Sun-like star has an unconfirmed extrasolar planet.
In mythology: Zeus sent Hermes with the task of rescuing Io. To avoid detection by one of Argus' one hundred eyes, Hermes charmed the monster with a flute when it was fast asleep, then threw a huge boulder on top of it, and for good measure cut off its head. An angry Hera set a gadfly to pester Io, who then roamed around most of the Mediterranean nations before finally settling down in Egypt, where Zeus changed her back into human form. She later established the worship of Isis in Egypt. As for the unfortunate Argus, Hera put all of its many eyes on the tail of her sacred bird, the peacock.

@Labbul Luca: Im an avid fan of constellations. ALthough I may not know all of them out of my ehad, at least I can rememeber. I have some scanned pictures of drawn constellation (published years ago). And I remembered seeing an Indian woman holding arrows and a peacock near her. So I rechecked and I was right. There IS a constellation made from a peacock Peacock is Hera's pet. So that's why it got to be in the sky.

Well, of course the other constellations exist but only 13 of them passes through the Sun in which they are called the zodiac. There are a total of 88 constellations so they do exist.
