This post is a little unused, but I have to throw in my two-pence!  I'm a girl, but I rarely cry over books, movies, anime/manga, etc.  (I did spend most of "Farewell, My Concubine" in tears, though.)  Anyway, I cry ALL THE TIME during Saint Seiya.  I think there's something really beautiful about how those Bronze Saints stick together and put their lives on the line for each other and for Saori/Athena.  I'm constantly re-watching the 12 Zodiac Temples Arc, and the part that really does it for me is during Hyoga's fight with Milo.  Hyoga says something like he's hated God for giving him such a cursed existence, but he's always been thankful to have been born into this life with such precious friends.  I just think that's a wonderful feeling to have, and for Hyoga who's life revolved around, well... his dead mother, the fact that he realizes he has things worth crying over (like Shun who saves his life right before this) was really touching.

Anyway, I think gender shouldn't affect how manly or feminine a person is, but I might be too much of a progressive thinker.  I have a lot of respect for a man who lets himself cry.  This might be derailing a little, but I think I cry more about things relating to "friendship" and "brotherhood" (even though I am a sister) more than definitively sad events, so maybe that's why this show gets me.  If a man can empathize and sympathize enough to cry, I think that's really something (in a positive way re: breaking free from gender-stereotypes).

i don't think a guy is less manly if he cries. then again i guess it would depend on the situation.

It's culture that determines whether manliness allows crying for specific reasons. Classically (ancient), it was acceptable for a man to openly weep for the loss of his father, brother, or son. Fictive kinship is basically the only other context where it was acceptable to mourn the loss of the fictive kin. This would include a master and student relationship. In Saint Seiya, the crying is almost always relegated to matters of true or fictive kinship. It would be a poor accusation for someone to consider the characters un-manly for crying when they do.

I cant recall I wept when I watched SS, in any scene. Yes, in some parts, I felt sad. Esp when sad vocalized music was played. But I never wept. But I do weep when I watch WIndStruck. It's a very sad Korean movie... I wrote a thread about it in the TV/Movie section:

I cry at a lot of things. I think I cried a few times in Saint Seiya.  Anyway, the characters crying so much was one of the reasons I loved the series, as it reminded me of The Illiad and various other Greek tales.

Two examples that come to mind :
- As for SS, I remember I cried tears in the Asgard chapter, when Shiryu (that bastard !) hits a frozen waterfall and covers Fenrir with an avalanche. His wolves start to dig him up, they lick his face, and they they jump back and whimper when they realize he's not responsive. And than that melancholic sountrack playing ;_;
- I remember crying when watching the movie, "The last samurai", when the character that Tom Cruise plays gets down on his knees in front of the women who is his host, and asks for forgiveness killing her husband ;_;
I notice that I do tend to cry at movies and series, but I find it hard to cry in public (it's my education I guess). Here, living in Belgium, I very rarely see men cry in company. Personally I think it's a healthy thing and it can do wonderful things to your emotions (and sometimes may warm up people towards you)
